A troubled 20-year-old loner with a history of autistic behavior is the monster behind a horrific shooting at a Connecticut elementary school that left 26 people, including 20 children, dead on Friday.

Adam Lanza shot his mother, Nancy, at the upscale suburban home they shared together and then took three of her guns and drove to Sandy Hook Elementary School about 9.30am.

He used two semi-automatic pistols, a Glock and Sig Sauer, and reportedly wiped out an entire classroom of young children, then shot several in a second class before taking his own life.

Witnesses say Lanza was going from room to room shooting people, after first killing the principal Dawn Hochsprung and the school psychologist Mary Sherlach execution-style when they confronted him in the hallway.

Parents who had not already been united with their children at the nearby fire station were told to assume the worst. One witness told WCBS: 'Police just told us everyone presumed missing is in the school and they are dead.'

Lanza used to be a mild-mannered student in high school, making the honor roll, and living with his mother, Nancy Lanza, who in turn loved playing dice games and decorating their upscale home for the holidays.

A student in his tenth grade Honors English class recalled he was very quiet, very thin and carried a black briefcase to class, which stuck out when all the other kids carried backpacks.

He dressed more formally than other students, often wearing khaki pants, button-down shirts and at times, a pocket protector. Many recalled that he was highly intelligent.

Medical examiner: all Sandy Hook victims died of multiple gunshot wounds

NEWTOWN, Conn.--Dr. H. Wayne Carver, the medical examiner investigating Friday's massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School, said autopsies completed on 20 children and six adults on Saturday showed they were killed with multiple bullets fired by a rifle at close range.

"I've been at this for a third of a century and my sensibilities may not be those of the average man, but this probably is the worst I have seen or the worst that I know of any of my colleagues have seen," Carver told reporters gathered at Treadwell Park, less than a mile from the school where the shooting occurred.

Lt. Paul Vance distributed a photocopied list with the names and dates of birth of the victims, including 12 girls and 8 boys, most of them born in 2006.

The youngest was Noah Pozner, who celebrated his 6th birthday in November. Josephine Gay, another victim, turned 7 on Dec. 11, three days before the massacre. The oldest victim identified Saturday was Mary Sherlach, age 56.

All of the adult victims were women, aged 27 to 56.

Autopsies on the suspected shooter, who police say shot himself, and his mother--who was found dead in their Newtown home--would be conducted Sunday, Carver said.

Police have still not released his name. "You have to understand this is an ongoing investigation, with an active crime scene," Vance said.

The veteran medical examiner told reporters that the victims had all been identified and their bodies released. In what appeared to be an uncomfortable moment for Carver, he said all of the victims he had examined had all been shot by a Bushmaster .223 caliber assault rifle, one of at least two weapons Adam Lanza, the 20-year-old suspected shooter, used to commit one of the deadliest mass shootings in U.S. history.

"This is only the second press conference I have ever done," in more than 30 years, Carver noted dryly.

Lanza allegedly gunned down his mother, Nancy Lanza, at their home Friday before driving to Sandy Hook and forcing his way inside to commence the deadly shooting spree.

Before the names were released, Newtown First Selectman Patricia Llodra urged the crush of media assembled at the park to respect the victims' families.

"Please treat our community with kindness," Llodra said. "We need your help on this healing journey."

Earlier, Sen. Richard Blumenthal met with local officials and families in Newtown, but refused to engage in the debate over gun control in the wake of the shooting.

"We're going to have that conversation at another time," Blumenthal told Yahoo! News. "Right now my focus is on this community, the families and the continuing shock and grief they are experiencing."

He added: "I can't imagine any job tougher than to tell parents their 7-year-old is gone. It's the worst nightmare for any parent."

Today I swung my front door wide open and placed my Remington 30.06 right in the doorway.
I left 6 shells beside it, then left it alone
and went about my business. While I was gone, the mailman delivered
my mail, the neighbor boy across the street mowed the yard, a girl
walked her dog down the street, and quite a few cars stopped at the
stop sign near the front of our house. After about an hour, I checked
on the gun. It was still sitting there, right where I had left it. It
hadn't moved itself outside. It certainly hadn't killed anyone, even
with the numerous opportunities it had been presented to do so. In
fact, it hadn't even loaded itself. Well you can imagine my surprise,
with all the media hype about how dangerous guns are and how they
kill people.
Either the media is wrong or I'm in possession of the laziest gun in the world.
Well, I'm off to check on my spoons. I hear they're making people fat.
The United States is 3rd in Murders throughout the World. But if you
take out Chicago , Detroit , Washington DC and New Orleans , the
United States is 4th from the bottom for Murders. These 4 Cities also
have the toughest Gun Control Laws in the United States . ALL 4 are

UPDATE: 7:00 p.m. -- Feinstein indicated later Tuesday the prospects for including the high capacity magazine ban in a baseline gun control bill looked bleak.

She told reporters she had been promised two votes???? -- one on an assault weapons ban, including a ban on high capacity magazines, and another on just the magazine ban. Feinstein said it was her understanding that both of these votes would be on amendments, rather than on any gun control package introduced by the Senate.

 

How do you register a gun magazine?
They don't have serial numbers and they are mass produced meaning each manufacturer's product looks exactly the same.

Clips are not the same things as magazines. An M1 rifle utilizes an 8 round enbloc clip, an AR15 rifle utilizes a 30 magazine. There is a difference.

- I'm happy to see that they at least paid some lip service to improving mental health care with this do little bill. Since the vast majority of gun deaths are suicides any improvement in mental health care is far more likely to have a measurable impact on gun deaths than any assault weapons ban.

A new gun law proponents say helps law enforcement has driven Smith & Wesson and Sturm Ruger out of California, and affirmed the suspicions of firearms rights advocates that the measure is really about making handguns obsolete.

The two companies have announced they will stop selling their wares in the nation's most populous state rather than try to comply with a law that requires some handguns to have technology that imprints a tiny stamp on the bullet so it can be traced back to the gun. The companies, and many gun enthusiasts, say so-called "microstamping" technology is unworkable in its present form and can actually impair a gun's performance.

“Smith & Wesson does not and will not include microstamping in its firearms,” the Springfield, Mass.,-based manufacturer said in a statement. “A number of studies have indicated that microstamping is unreliable, serves no safety purpose, is cost prohibitive and, most importantly, is not proven to aid in preventing or solving crimes.

“The microstamping mandate and the company’s unwillingness to adopt this so-called technology will result in a diminishing number of Smith & Wesson semi-automatic pistols available for purchase by California residents.”

Southport, Conn.-based Sturm Ruger also announced this month that they will also stop selling their guns in California due to the microstamping law.

Firearm microstamping, or ballistic imprinting, works by engraving a microscoping marking onto the tip of the firing pin. When the gun is fired, it leaves an imprint, usually of a serial number, on the bullet casings. The telltale mark theoretically allows law enforcement investigators to trace the bullet to the registered gun owner. California’s law is the first in the nation to be implemented and was originally signed into effect in October 2007, but not implemented until recently. Several other states are considering similar measures.

Law-enforcement is exempt from microstamping requirements.

Critics say tracing a bullet to a registered gun owner does little to fight crime, since criminals often kill with stolen handguns. Many believe tracing bullets was never the real intent of the law in the first place.

"This is the latest attempt to undermine the Second Amendment in California by politicians with little to no knowledge of firearms, who seek to impose their liberal values upon those who choose to protect their families with the constitutional right to own a handgun," said Chuck Michel, West Coast Counsel for the National Rifle Association, an Adjunct Professor at Chapman University and author of the book "California Gun Laws."

One of the main arguments critics pose is the claim that the technology is not perfected, yet the requirement has been put into effect.

“The technology doesn’t fully exist yet, but by making it into a law, they [California] in fact enacted a gun law without actually passing one,” David Kopel, a constitutional law professor at the Denver University Sturm College of Law and Research Director of the Independence Institute, told FoxNews.com. “This is an indirect way to ban new handguns from being sold.”

The patent holder of microstamping tech, Todd Lizotte, was part of a Department of Justice study team which concluded that, “legitimate questions exist related to both the technical aspects, production costs, and database management associated with microstamping that should be addresses before wide scale implementation is legislatively mandated,” according to the study which was published in the Association of Firearm and Toolmark Examiners (AFTE) Journal.

Lawsuits were also filed against the Golden State this week by the National Shooting Sports Foundation and the Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers’ Institute challenging the microstamping law saying in a statement this week that they predicted back in 2007 when the law was first passed that it would result in a “de facto semiautomatic handgun ban.”

Other states considering a microstamping requirement include Connecticut, New York, and Massachusetts.

Smith & Wesson said it expects sales of its California-compliant revolvers, which aren't required to have microstamping, will offset the impact to the company. Company President and CEO James Debney vowed to continue to work with industry groups to oppose the law, while providing California customers with products that do comply with it.

Two trade groups, the National Shooting Sports Foundation and the Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers Institute, filed a legal challenge to the law in California Superior Court earlier this month.
